What Are Natural Products?

Natural products are made up almost entirely of natural ingredients that have been manufactured with the appropriate processes to maintain the ingredients’ natural qualities.

The term ‘natural’ is very broad when it relates to products. Different countries have different but strict requirements for buyers and there are regulations for suppliers. Natural products are safe for human use while being gentle on the earth.

There are a few categories that fall under the ‘natural’ definition.

  • Quality Management
  • Organic Certification
  • FairWild Certification
  • Fairtrade International
  • Fair for Life
  • Ethical sourcing and biodiversity

In the US there is the Natural Product Association (NPA). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates most natural products.

US certifications include the Natural Seal Personal Care. The NPA natural standard means that the product has natural ingredients and was made with safety, responsibility, and sustainability in mind.

What Are Natural Diapers?

Natural Diapers should be made without artificial ingredients and should be minimally processed. They should not have fragrances, dioxins, and be made of 100% natural fibers where possible.

For diapers to be natural there are a few things that they can have.

  • They shouldn’t contain ingredients that are suspected to risk human health.
  • No ingredient should have been tested on animals.
  • Where possible they should use biodegradable ingredients and environmentally-sensitive packaging.
  • The ingredients should come from or be made from a renewable resource found in nature.
  • A natural diaper shouldn’t contain chemicals.
  • Each ingredient should be recognized and approved by the FDA.
  • The supply and production process should be transparent.

Because the term is used loosely, third-party certification is important as it means the diapers and the ingredients have been checked for ‘natural’ status.

An NPA seal means a diaper has been certified as ‘natural’ and if it contains NSF-certified organic materials then it is also an indication of a more natural diaper.

Unfortunately, the Consumer Product Safety Commission which regulates the diaper industry does not require manufacturers to test products for chemicals or disclose ingredients.
