Disposable Diapers vs. Cloth Diapers

As a parent who has used disposable and cloth diapers, I can honestly say both have pros and cons. Cloth diapers are good diapers if you have your own washing machine and want to avoid last-minute trips to the store because you’re out of diapers. Cloth is also better for the environment and less likely to need diaper cream.

Disposables, however, are becoming more eco-conscious and gentler for your baby’s skin. In addition, disposables make traveling and errands easier and are accepted at childcare centers; cloth rarely is.

Ultimately you need to weigh the pros and cons to decide on the best diaper type for your needs. Some parents, like myself, do a blend of both.

How to Choose the Best Diapers?

To choose the best diapers, you should consider cost, fit, materials, special features, availability, and how eco-friendly they are. First, decide which of these factors is most important to you and which are least.

Eco-Friendly

When choosing a baby diaper, many parents are concerned about the brand’s impact on the environment. Unfortunately, it is believed that conventional disposable diapers will take at least 300 years to decompose.

Look for eco-friendly diapers made from plant-based materials that use sustainable materials or packaging, and use sustainable manufacturing practices.

Materials

The best premium diapers also use top-notch materials. Your baby is in a diaper for almost 24-7 the first two to three years of their life, so it is important you check what’s going next to their bottom. Many disposable diaper companies are now using cotton as the material that touches a baby’s skin.

Cloth diapers are also frequently made from cotton. Bamboo, hemp, and microfleece are other popular fabric choices.

Absorbency

Nobody wants a leaky diaper. Leaky diapers cost more money and time because they need to be changed more often, and you’ll do more laundry.

Some natural fibers are more absorbent than others. Cotton, for example, while absorbent, often needs to be paired with hemp or bamboo for maxim leak protection.

Disposable diapers, particularly those mixed with a polymer, are incredibly absorbent and can hold a lot of liquid.

Sizing and Fit

Even the best diaper brand can cause leaks if the size and fit aren’t correct. Most diaper brands go by weight, but sizes can vary from one brand to the next. Therefore if you are switching brands, don’t assume that just because your baby wears Size 1 diapers with Brand A, they will also wear Size 1 with Brand B.

Diapers that are too loose and too tight cause leaks and blowouts to occur. You should be able to fit two fingers in the waistband and one finger in the leg bands. If the diapers leave red marks on your baby’s skin, they are too small or tight.

Wetness Indicator

Some parents prefer a wetness indicator to know when it is time to change their baby. This is particularly true for new parents who haven’t established a routine or know what “normal” is.

If you’re not concerned about this feature, you can check your baby’s wetness by feeling if the diaper is saturated or peeking inside to look for a mess.

Extra Features

As your baby grows and changes, the extra features you’re looking for on a diaper will also change.

For example, the best diaper for breastfed baby will be ultra-absorbent and fit snuggly. If they are cloth diapers, you want ones that will wash easily and not retain stains.

As your baby becomes older and begins moving, stretchy sides and flexible waistbands are important.

Potty training toddlers may benefit from slip-on diapers that go on and off like underwear. However, it is best to reassess from time to time which added features your child most needs.
